Small Business Saturday is this weekend, which means a lot
of local shops will be offering a lot of great deals. I wanted to spread the word
because shopping locally is a great way to support the small business in our area.
You can find some really unique items at these shops.
The unofficial holiday began in 2010 as a counterpoint to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are focused mainly on major retailers and e-commerce sites. Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to frequent small, brick-and-mortar stores in their communities. The very first event was sponsored by American Express in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The campaign was extremely successful on social media and has been successful in the years since. In 2013 the U.K. established Small Business Saturday because it was so successful in the United States.
As I mentioned earlier, I love shopping small. Not just because I work for a credit union but because the atmosphere in these shops is totally different than major chains. Below are some of the small businesses in the different communities where River Valley has a presence, plus a few of my favorite ones.
