I have a big announcement that I can’t wait to share with
everyone! As you know, River Valley and I sponsored three 4 Paws for Ability
pups last year. Plummette became a fabulous flunky, Yonder became a breeder,
and Azure is headed to advanced training. Once Azure is in advanced training he
will learn what he will specialize in and get matched with a family. I am so
excited for Azure, but sad at the same time. I will miss his updates and
visits, but he is going to make a great service dog. Azure’s mom wrote a
touching Facebook post (read it )
that talks about something I have been thinking about doing for a while. I am
excited to say my husband and I have applied to be puppy raisers for 4 Paws!
This decision has been six months in the making for us. We have been wanting to become more involved in our community and in local charity organizations, but with a child who is almost four years old, that isn’t always possible. Sure, we could have someone come watch her while we go volunteer, but we wanted to include her. I want her to see how you can change someone’s life just by volunteering some of your time. She is too young for us to volunteer in many of the traditional venues, but by becoming puppy raisers we get to make a difference in our home and while we are out and about, and she gets to be a part of it!
There are a few reasons why we specifically chose 4 Paws for Ability. I already have an existing relationship with 4 Paws thanks to River Valley and sponsoring Azure. Another reason is their work speaks to my heart. I love animals, but I also love children and have a deep respect for veterans. Children who have disabilities play a special role in my life. When I was young I would go to work with my mom, who is a Special Education paraprofessional, and help her with her work. Seeing the compassion she had for kids with special needs and the difference she made in their lives really had an impact on me.
My husband also works with children who have disabilities, namely autism. He helps teach social skills and life skills such as going to the bank that can help a child with autism lead a normal life, which helps give their families peace of mind. The fact that 4 Paws for Ability offers Autism Assistance dogs was a huge deciding factor in our choice. I encourage you to read more about their Autism Assistance dogs. These dogs make a monumental difference in their families’ lives.
I hope you will follow our journey through my blog and on my Facebook and Instagram pages, @RiverValleyVal. I can’t wait to get started!
